Confident Presenting

One of the key presentation skills that is not in evidence today is how to present with confidence. OK so why is this not evident in many business preseters today?

Many people suffer the following reactions when the present: sweaty palms; fidgeting; losing track; mind going blank. If we took everybody’s symptoms and put them all in a list you’d probably be surprised at just how many there are. The strange thing is that many seemingly confident presenters also suffer from some of these symptoms!

OK then just how can you become more confident when presenting? What techniques do people use to get into a more confident state?

There are many different techniques that people use. You need to try them out and then choose which work best for you. Here's three things to start you off.

Prepare. Prepare. Prepare! Know your audience, what makes them tick.Research your audience thoroughly. Then ensure that your presentation is designed with them in mind.

Have a succinct outline to your presentation. Always keep it simple with a distinct beginning, middle and end. And limit your primary ideas to 3 in total. This will help you keep track and make it simpler for your audience to follow.

Try and speak more slowly. Lots of people speed up when they present - when the nerves kick in. Take more time with your delivery. The temptation is always to get it over with. But if you think ‘slow motion’ when you begin you will actually feel in more control of things and this will give you more confidence and self assurance.

Try to use these three tips the next time you present. And hopefully you’ll be more in control and of course more confident throughout!
